Frank Castorf did a grand staging of Alfred Döblins famous novel Berlin Alexanderplatz (1929).
First produced in the Schauspielhaus Zurich, it came to Berlin in 2005, right near to the Alexanderplatz in the now legendary Palast der Republik. The Palace of the Republic, house of the former DDR parliament, was used in those days after turn of history, for a few cultural projects and later on, it was demolished.
To work there, under such circumstances, was great and the theatre evening was huge in total.
It was my first theatre production and I took part as an assistant of stage design. It was done by Bert Neumann.
